  • Introduction

Dr. A. P.J. Abdul Kalam (Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulaabdin Abdul Kalam) is a name with which people of all religions, all ages feel connected.

  • The early life of Abdul kalam

Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October 1931 in a middle-class Muslim family in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. His father's name was Zainul Abedin and mother's name was Ashiyamma. 

His father was a poor sailor who used to live by renting a boat to fishermen. His father had a great influence on him.

His father was less educated but his dedication and his values ​​were very useful for Abdul Kalam. His mother was a pious and kind woman. Whose qualities also came inside Abdul Kalam.

  • Childhood of Abdul kalam

Abdul Kalam's childhood was a struggle. He used to get up at four in the morning to go to tuition for mathematics. 

After returning from there at 5 o'clock, he would offer namaz with his father, then bring newspapers from the Dhanushkodi railway station, three kilometers from home and roam around and sell them. 

By 8 o'clock he used to sell newspapers and return home. After that, he went to school. After returning from school, he used to go out in the evening to recover newspaper money.

Due to Kalam's dedication and hard work, his mother used to take special care of him in the matter of food and drink. Due to high rice yield in the south, Rotis are eaten less there.

But despite this, Kalam was very fond of Chapatis. That's why his mother used to give him two Chapatis to eat every day. 

One day the bread was less in food. Seeing this, the mother gave her a share of bread to Kalam. 

His elder brother gently told Kalam this. Kalam was overwhelmed by this and ran and hugged his mother.

  • The Student Life of Abdul Kalam 

He was educated at Panchayat Primary School, Rameswaram at the age of 5 years. After primary school, Kalam completed his schooling from Schwartz School. 

Subsequently, he joined St. Joseph's College, Trichy in 1950. From there, he completed his B.Sc. In 1958, Kalam obtained a degree in Aeronautical engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology.

  • Abdul Kalam's professional life

In 1962, Kalam joined the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). Dr. Abdul Kalam received the credit for making India's first indigenous satellite (S.L.V. III) missile as project director.

In 1980, he placed the Rohini satellite near the Earth's orbit. Thus India also became a member of the International Space Club. He is also credited with offering the ISRO launch vehicle program.

Dr. Kalam designed the indigenous target piercing (Guided Missiles). They made missiles like Agni and Prithvi with indigenous technology. 

Dr. Kalam was the Science Advisor to the Defense Minister from July 1992 to December 1999 and Secretary of the Department of Security Research and Development. 

They used the Strategic Missiles System as firearms. Similarly, for the second time in Pokhran, a nuclear explosion was also done with nuclear energy. 

In this way, India succeeded in achieving the ability to build nuclear arms. Dr. Kalam gave a specific thought to make India's development level cutting edge in the field of science by 2020.

He was also the Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government of India. In 1982, he came back to the Indian Defense Research and Development Institute as a director and focused all his attention on the development of "Guided Missiles".

He is credited for the successful test of Agni missile and Prithvi missile. In July 1992, he was appointed Scientific Advisor in the Ministry of Defense of India.

Under his supervision, India conducted its second successful nuclear test in Pokhran in 1998 and was included in the list of nuclear-powered nations.

  • The death

He died of a heart attack on 27 July 2015 while giving a lecture in Shillong. With his death, the whole country was left speechless. 

Suddenly no one believed. Everyone felt as if someone had left and left them. The whole country wept at his death. His death felt as if an era had ended.

  • The Honor

Given the scholarly and merit of Dr. Kalam, he was honored as Anna University of Technology, Kalyani University, Hyderabad University, Jadavpur University, Banaras Hindu University, Mysore University, Roorkee University, Allahabad University, Delhi University, Madras University, Andhra University, Bharatidasan Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj University, Tezpur University If, Madurai Kamaraj University, Rajiv Gandhi University of Technology, IIT Delhi, IIT Mumbai, IIT Kanpur, Birla Institute of Technology, Indian School of Science, Sayajirao University of Baroda, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Visvesvaraya Technological University awarded honorary degrees of "Doctor of Science" separately.

Also, Jawaharlal Nehru Technology University, Hyderabad gave him "Ph.D." (Doctor of Philosophy) and Visva-Bharati Shanti Niketan and Dr. Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Aurangabad gave him "D. Honorary degrees of Lit ”(Doctor of Literature).


Along with these, he is an honored member of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, National Academy of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, Aeronautical Society of India, Honorary Member of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers, Engineering Staff College of India Is a professor and a special professor of ISRO.


  • Award

Due to his contribution to the development of science and technology, he has been awarded many awards by various institutions. The awards he received are as follows:

1. National Design Award - 1980 (Institution of Engineers, India)


2. Dr. Biren Roy Spaces Award-1986 (Aeronautical Society of India)

3. Om Prakash Bhasin Award


4. National Nehru Award-1990 (Government of Madhya Pradesh)


5. Aryabhata Award-1994 (Astronomical Society of India)


6. Prof. why. Nayudamma (Memorial Gold Medal - 1996, Andhra Pradesh Academy of Sciences)


7. GM Modi Award-1996,


8. H.K. Firodia Award-1996


9. Veer Savarkar Award-1998 etc.


He was also awarded the Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration (1997). Apart from this, he was also awarded the Padma Bhushan (1981), Padma Vibhushan (1990) and the "Bharat Ratna" award (1997) respectively.

Dr. Abdul Kalam was the 11th elected President of the Indian Republic. He is also known as Missile Man of India. 

Dr. Kalam remained unmarried for a lifetime and devoted his entire life to the service of the country. He always insisted on education. According to him, we can make ourselves and our country better by education.
